A common thing to do at the department of Automatic control, where I work, is to write a Licentiate thesis halfway through the Ph.D. The Licentiate degree is an academic degree used as a “declaration of future research in the Ph.D.“. I plan to present in about a year, but the planning starts now.
It makes me a bit sad that the spontaneous reaction from some people is, “Oh, so you are quitting your Ph.D.?” – No, that is not at all what I’m doing! I take the opportunity to practice writing, to learn, and to summarize my thoughts.
I think this will be an enlightening experience for me.
